The topic this month for our Compass Group Coaching group is The Pursuit of Happiness.  I love this topic!

Many times we think of happiness as a destination.  I will be happy when I am making X amount of dollars, I will be happy when I have this house in this particular neighborhood, I will be happy when I drive this car.  The truth is that happiness is in no way a destination; it is a state of mind. 

I think we have all experienced achieving something that we thought would make us happy and finding out that the opposite was true.  True happiness can only come from pursuing your own dreams and your own goals.  The trick many times comes in separating which goals are really are own and which were other people’s goals and expectations for us. 

Personally, I think the first step to being happy to just that; BE happy.  It is a decision.  So decide and then act upon that decision.  Imagine what your life could look like if you decided to approach it from this new perspective of happiness.  Why would we CHOOSE anything else?

Mother’s Day is fast approaching.  May 13, 2012.  Have you even started thinking about a gift for your Mom?

My Mom just turned 71 this week.  If you are anything like me, buying her gifts has become increasingly difficult.  I want to be able to give her something meaningful. No knick knacks.  Believe you me, she has all of the knick knacks she could ever possibly need.

What is this Work Life Balance Thing?

We have been told that we can do it all.  We can have an amazing, satisfying career, we can have a family, pursue outside interests.  We can generally do anything that we put our minds to. 

Sounds awesome.  The problem, doing all of these things simultaneously can absolutely occur.  Doing them all WELL is another issue entirely.  In my experience, on some level you do have to choose.  Your priority cannot be your Career and your Family.  One of them has to be a bigger priority for you.  Once you get clear about this, many things will fall into place. 

My thought is that everything has its season.  If your priority now is family it does not mean that your priority later won’t be career and vice versa.  Appreciate whatever season you are in.  They are constantly changing. 

For me, I have been focused on career for most of my life.  Last summer, my husband and I had twins. My whole world changed.  I struggled quite a bit with Life Balance in the first few months.  However, I came to the realization that I had to align my life with my priorities. 

My top priority was the babies.  Anything else had to come after, period.  Where did I go to work on Life Balance?  I went to My Life Compass.  Through the daily MAPS (monthly action plans) I was able to get clear about what it was that I really wanted in my life and take the actions steps to get me there.  In addition, the calls that I have three times a month with my Life Coach are an absolute lifeline to me.
